Winding and bearing temperature under control

Sensors in the windings and bearings feed a thermal protection relay that warns, switches the cooling and trips the motor before heat causes damage.

Electric motor monitored by an Electron RTU installed in a cabinet

Measurement points on the motor

Windings with PT100 or Cu10

The EPU supervises up to 16 temperature channels at once, for windings, bearings and housings.

Windings with PTC

The RT49 provides thermal protection (ANSI 49) with PTC sensors: 2 inputs and up to 4 sensors in series per input.

Bearings

PT100 sensors in the bearings, connected to the EPU or to the MoniTemp, which reads three sensors.

Current and integration

Split-core current transducer, TIIE transducer, CRS converter and RTU bring the measurements to the supervisory system.

What the relay signals

On the EPU, each stage has its own 10 A relay with a programmable delay:

Alarm

Warns that the temperature passed the first limit.

Cooling

Up to two relays switch the cooling.

Trip

Shuts the equipment down when the critical limit is reached.

Fault

Signals a fault condition.

How to size it

  1. Count the points

Add up the winding and bearing sensors of each motor.

  2. Choose by sensor type

PT100 or Cu10: EPU, up to 16 channels. PTC: RT49, with 2 inputs.

  3. Define the integration

Use the EPU Modbus, DNP3 or MQTT, or gather the signals in an RTU.

Monitoring rotating machines

Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. As rotating, dynamic machines, they require attention to maintenance and performance. Electron provides solutions that support monitoring and protection in these applications.
